Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 71

Evan had just arrived at the office when he heard from Jason that Melissa had deposited money into the account he’d previously used to transfer her funds.

One hundred thousand dollars. The memo said “repayment.”

Jason reported, “Miss Carter said this is all the money she could borrow for now, but she’ll work hard to pay you back the rest as soon as possible.”

Evan didn’t say a word. He flipped open the financial report that had been placed on his desk that morning and gave a cool, detached hum of acknowledgment.

“Is there anything else?”

Jason scratched his head, looking puzzled. “I think… that’s all. I’ll be on my way, then.”

The door closed softly behind him.

Once Jason’s footsteps faded away from his office door, Evan violently slammed the report in his hand onto the floor.

He shot up from his chair and paced back and forth in a fury. Still fuming, he irritably yanked at his tie.

He picked up his phone, his thumb hovering several times over the unsaved number from the late-night call, but ultimately, he put it down.

Fine. If she wanted to pay him back, let her. He’d like to see just how much money she could possibly come up with.

Meanwhile, Emma had just finished her morning chemotherapy session and was now in Nathan’s office.

“I’m sorry, Dr. Allen. I left the jacket in my car. I got held up the last couple of days and haven’t had a chance to wash it yet…”

Nathan just grunted.

An awkward expression flickered across Emma’s face. She could tell he was displeased but couldn’t figure out what she had done to offend him.

If there was a reason, it was probably that she had missed her appointment yesterday without notifying the hospital staff, causing them to make arrangements for nothing, increasing their workload and wasting their time.
