Inside the Cooper Group tower.
Jason had noticed that his boss had been acting strangely lately.
Every time he went in to deliver materials, drop off documents, or report on work, his boss seemed completely distracted.
Like right now. He had just delivered the list from the HR department and was about to leave the office when his boss suddenly called out to him.
"Are you busy?"
Jason stopped and turned to face him.
Are you busy?
In the corporate world, that phrase was loaded.
When a boss asked if you were busy, it almost certainly meant he had another task for you.
This put him in a tough spot. Saying he wasn't busy meant accepting the task. Saying he was would be a polite refusal.
As a dedicated corporate drone, Jason knew the game well. Thinking of his $150,000 monthly salary, he finally shook his head and said cautiously, "Not at all. What's up, Mr. Cooper?"
"Good. I need to talk to you about something. Have a seat."
Evan stood up, poured a glass of water, and placed it in front of Jason.
"Oh, Mr. Cooper, I can get it myself! Please, don't trouble yourself…"
Seeing his boss serve him water nearly made Jason jump out of his skin.
"What are you so worked up about? It's just a glass of water. Sit down."
Evan placed a hand on his shoulder, guiding him to sit.
Jason sat down tensely, his hands placed neatly on his knees, his back perfectly straight.
"I… uh, have a friend."
Evan glanced at Jason, took the cigarette without a word, and put it between his lips. Just as he was wishing he had a lighter, Jason, ever perceptive, produced one.
Evan exhaled a plume of white smoke.
He took the cigarette from his mouth and continued in a deeper voice, "He wants to break it off with the girl, but he can't quite bring himself to do it. She was a virgin when she got with him, and they've been together for over a year now."
Jason nodded in understanding, his eyes darting around as he asked, "Mr. Cooper, I'm a little lost. Didn't you just say this friend was troubled because of his ex-wife? How did his mistress get involved?"
Evan didn't answer, just shot an impatient glance at the clueless Jason. "He obviously wants to get back together with his ex-wife, which is why he wants to break up with his mistress. You can't even figure that out?"
Evan's brow furrowed. He was suddenly starting to question how Jason had ever been hired.
"Oh, oh, I get it, I get it, Mr. Cooper! You mean he wants to break up with his mistress to get back with his ex-wife, but he's hesitant because of their history, right?"
"Yeah."
Evan nodded and looked at Jason. "So? You got any bright ideas?"
