Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 62

It was a strange feeling.

Evan couldn't explain it. He looked down and cleared his throat before finally responding, “Right. I’ll, uh, I’ll go get the car.”

Evan drove a long way, bypassing the largest nearby superstore and heading to a newly opened one on the far outskirts of the city.

Emma didn't know about the new store. Watching the city buildings shrink in the rearview mirror, she grew first puzzled, then uneasy. “Where are you taking me?”

They were heading out of the city. Could it be… was Evan planning to secretly murder her?

Stung by Emma’s wary gaze, Evan managed to force a smile. “There’s a new members-only warehouse club that just opened on the outskirts of the city. It’s an import. It’s bigger and less crowded there.”

“Oh…”

Realizing he wasn't planning to kill her, Emma sat up straight again, her eyes fixed on the road ahead.

They had woken up early and left early. Through the window, she could clearly see the sun slowly rising from the west, an orange orb wrapped in flecks of gold, painting half the sky in a warm, glowing hue.

It was already the dead of winter, December.

The farther they got from the city, the brighter the clouds became, like fluffs of washed cotton against a deepening blue sky.

“Do you like it?”

Evan smiled faintly as he glanced at his wife beside him.

Emma smiled back. “I do.”

“It’s a lot like the sky in Riverside Millford. Blue skies, white clouds, wide-open spaces.”

At the mention of Riverside Millford, Evan’s eyes darkened for a moment before he forced another smile. “Yeah, it is. Do you… want to go back?”

Did she want to go back?

What a stupid question.
