Ignoring whether Nathan’s question was out of concern or sarcasm, Emma casually swept her long, wavy hair up, tied it back with an elastic band, and looked at him. “For treatment.”
The chemotherapy was more agonizing than Emma had imagined. The sky outside was a dreary gray, while the hospital walls under the fluorescent lights were a blinding white. The two contrasting colors swam in her vision.
When it was all over and the nurse switched off the machine, Emma lay there for another ten minutes before she could muster the strength to sit up. The glamorous look she had put together that morning was now completely gone.
Her face was pale as she clung to the wall, taking one slow step at a time toward the exit.
Nathan, the last to leave the treatment room, saw her as he stepped out. He stood still, watching her figure struggle forward. She was wearing sky-high heels, and her legs were trembling, making it look like she could fall at any moment.
A nurse walked by. Nathan called her over and gave her a meaningful look. The young nurse understood immediately, hurried over to Emma, and gently took her arm. “Ma'am, let me help you out. Those heels are a bit high. It might be better to wear flats next time you come for chemo.”
Looking at the kind nurse who was supporting her, Emma nodded gratefully. “Thank you. I will. I’m never wearing heels this high again.”
Who knew she’d end up in such a state after the treatment? If she had known, she wouldn’t have even bothered with makeup and just worn a mask.
The nurse helped her to the parking garage. After thanking her again, Emma got into her car. She sat there for a long while before finally driving back to her villa.
As soon as she opened the front door, she noticed a pair of men’s leather shoes on the rug in the entryway. A second later, Mrs. Alvarez rushed out from the kitchen. “Ma’am, sir is back.”
Evan was back?
Emma frowned, kicked off her heels, and slipped into a pair of soft slippers as she walked into the living room.
Sure enough, there was Evan, sitting primly on the sofa.
