After waiting for a while and realizing he wasn't going to speak, Emma glanced at her phone, saw the call was still connected, and said impatiently, “Do you need something? Calling in the middle of the night to wake someone up just to stay silent?”
Being snapped at like that, Evan’s rising temper instantly deflated. He cleared his throat awkwardly. “...I called you many times this morning.”
From the driver's seat, Jason glanced at the back through the rearview mirror.
Mr. Cooper’s tone had sounded almost… aggrieved. Jason had never seen his boss act so vulnerable, and he couldn't resist a peek.
“So? You called me many times. Was there a point?”
Emma was getting irritated. Being woken from a deep sleep was bad enough, but it seemed he was just calling to make small talk.
What, was he done with his lover and now thought he should spread the attention around and check on her?
“Emma, can you just speak to me properly!”
Hearing the growing impatience and anger in her voice, Evan couldn’t stomach the slight and issued a sharp warning.
But before he could finish, he heard a click. She had hung up on him.
Evan was speechless.
Emma turned her phone off, tossed it aside, and pulled the covers over her head, wanting only to return to her pleasant sleep.
She slept soundly for the rest of the night, without any dreams.
