Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 35

Graymont City.

By the time the meeting on the top floor of the company building ended, it was already midnight. Evan had pulled an all-nighter the previous night and had spent the entire day reviewing projects for the branch office without a break.

After getting into the car, Evan wearily loosened his perfectly knotted tie. He took the bottle of water Mr. Walsh handed him, drank half of it, and then looked at his assistant. “Where’s my phone?”

He hadn’t looked at his phone for over eight hours. Evan was curious to see just how anxious Emma had become after being unable to reach him.

Hmph. She had only herself to blame. After all, she had ignored him all day.

Jason retrieved his boss’s phone from his briefcase.

As he handed it over, he saw a faint look of excitement on Evan’s face and chose to lower his head in silence.

Sometimes, saying nothing is a form of kindness, Jason thought.

“Why is there nothing here?”

He unlocked his phone. The dozens of missed calls he expected weren't there. The barrage of text messages wasn't there either.

He opened their chat window. There was only a single question mark she had sent at 6:10 PM.

?

“What’s going on?”

Evan instinctively frowned and looked at Jason in the driver's seat.

Jason wiped at the nonexistent sweat on his brow and said cautiously, “Mr. Cooper, your wife didn’t call today. I’m not sure why.”

Evan's phone was password-protected, so Jason couldn't unlock it. He only had permission to answer Emma's calls, so he had no idea she had even sent a question mark.
