Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 38

“I looked around, but didn't find anything I liked,” Emma said.

“I see.”

With that one-word reply, the awkward silence from earlier returned to the dinner table.

Evan recalled that he had been away on business while she was sick a few days ago, unable to properly care for her. Her coldness now seemed justified.

As a peace offering, he placed a piece of steamed sea bass on her plate. Emma disliked most fish, but she had a soft spot for steamed sea bass.

A piece of fish suddenly appeared on her plate. Emma paused for a moment, then pretended not to notice and continued eating.

By the time she had finished half her rice, the piece of sea bass was still sitting there untouched. A wave of irritation washed over Evan. He put down his fork and shot her a displeased look.

But Emma seemed completely oblivious, focusing on her meal and occasionally taking a second helping of something she particularly liked.

“Emma.”

Evan was clearly annoyed now.

“What is it?”

She lifted her head and glanced at him. “Do you need something?”

*Do you need something?* There it was again. That same dismissive question.

Evan’s patience snapped.

He stood up, left the table, and went straight upstairs to the study.

Hearing the commotion, Mrs. Alvarez hurried out from the kitchen. She saw the half-eaten food on Evan’s plate and asked with concern, “Ma’am, why did Mr. Cooper stop eating? Was my cooking not to his liking tonight?”

“It’s fine, Mrs. Alvarez,” Emma reassured her. “The food is delicious. He’s probably lost his appetite after eating out so much. Don’t worry about him.”
