Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 253

Thomas's physical condition hadn't seen any dramatic improvement lately, but his spirits were visibly lifting day by day.

Melissa sat by his hospital bed, peeling an apple for her father while listening to him gossip about relatives and neighbors.

"Your aunt, the third one, you remember how she always looked down on our family? When I first got sick and asked to borrow money, you should have seen the look on her face! Like she was terrified we'd never pay her back! And now? Now she knows you've made it, and she's come to us for help!"

"Asking us for help? Does my aunt need something?" Melissa asked, curious. She had no idea what had happened.

"You bet! The other day, she called me out of the blue, asking how I was doing, when I was getting out of the hospital, if I needed any money. I was wondering why she was suddenly being so nice. And then what do you think happened?"

Thomas couldn't help but sound smug. "It's her son, your cousin. He graduated with his master's degree but can't find a job, so now she's come to us for help."

Melissa had some recollection of this cousin. He had always been a good student. After a disappointing result on his college entrance exams, he got into a decent university, and then later was accepted into a prestigious graduate program. Overall, he was considered the most academically successful person in their extended family.

Her aunt had always been incredibly proud of him.

"But my cousin went to a really good school, and he has a master's. He shouldn't have any trouble finding a job, right?" Melissa was puzzled.

"Oh, he doesn't have trouble finding jobs, but his standards are too high for his abilities! The jobs he can get, he complains are too hard, too tiring, or don't pay enough. And the better jobs, well, he's not qualified for them. I heard he graduated last year and still hasn't found work. He's just sitting at home, mooching off your aunt and uncle!"

Hearing this, Melissa thought of her cousin, who was always the center of attention at family gatherings, the golden boy everyone admired. She felt a twinge of regret for him, but then asked, "But if he's looking for a job, why would Aunt ask you for help? You quit your job after you got sick, and even when you were working, you were just in logistics. What could you do to help?"
