Emma hung up and rushed into the bathroom to get ready.
Kelly didn't know the specifics, but from Emma's side of the conversation, she had pieced together the general situation.
"What are you going to do now, Ms. Xu?"
"Kelly, I'm going to pick up my mom first and take her straight home. When Mr. Allen comes for his rounds, could you please explain the situation to him?"
With that, Emma, now mostly ready, grabbed her phone and car keys and headed for the door.
Just as she was about to leave, a thought struck her. She stopped and turned back to Kelly. "Oh, and Kelly! My mom is here, so she probably won't be leaving anytime soon. Could you help me with the discharge procedures? I won't be staying at the hospital anymore."
"Of course."
Once Kelly agreed, Emma left without another moment's delay, driving quickly toward the train station.
It had only been a month since she'd last seen her mother. Emma wasn't sure if it was the change of location or something else, but when she saw her again, she felt that her mother looked much worse than she had back in Riverside Millford.
Karen Hayes was holding a cheap, woven plastic bag and wearing a clean but very unfashionable yellow jacket. She was laden with various plastic bags, looking disheveled and worn out.
"Mom!"
