"You are not to tell anyone else about me and him ever again! And you are definitely not to promise anyone help just to save face. His paying for your medical bills, your hospital stay, and my living expenses is already more than enough. He doesn't owe us anything else!"
Melissa had always felt that she was a level below Evan. She ate his food, used his things, and lived off his money. Evan covered nearly all of their expenses, and she was keenly aware of it.
Melissa had her pride. She knew she had already received more than she deserved, and the guilt and unease were a constant weight on her. The last thing she would do was ask Evan to help support her relatives.
Ever since he'd fallen ill, Thomas had become rather intimidated by Melissa. Perhaps it was because he'd been bedridden for so long and had lost his income, but the authoritative air of the head of the family was long gone.
Faced with his daughter's anger, he was scared, but he still tried to put on a brave face. "What's—what's the big deal! You're a perfectly respectable young woman. You're with him, so it's only right that he spends money on you. Besides, I was just talking to you, I never said I was actually going to ask him for help…"
His voice dwindled as he spoke.
But could a daughter not know her own father's personality?
Melissa knew that if he had brought it up, the thought of asking for help had definitely crossed his mind. Otherwise, he never would have mentioned her cousin's job search.
"I don't care whether you were serious or not. I don't want our family's problems to trouble him any further. We already owe him too much," Melissa said sternly.
