Emma met her ex-husband again at a cafe near the hospital.
Evan had been waiting for some time before she arrived. When he saw her coming from the direction of the hospital, he frowned instinctively, assuming she hadn't been discharged yet after her recent procedure.
"You're early."
Emma set down her bag, pulled out a chair, and sat down across from him.
"Hello, I'll have an iced Americano."
The server, holding a tablet, was about to take her order when a deep voice from the side cut in. "Change hers to a hot cappuccino, thank you."
Emma, who had been rummaging through her bag for the agreement, paused. She looked at Evan, annoyed. "I want an iced Americano."
"I'm sorry, miss, the order has already been placed. Would you like me to cancel it and re-enter it?"
The young server stood by with the tablet, looking apologetic and conflicted as he glanced between the young man and woman, unsure whose order to follow.
Emma stared at Evan, her eyes filled with irritation and annoyance, but in the end, she softened her tone. "It's fine, don't worry about it. The cappuccino is fine, thank you."
Not wanting to trouble the server, Emma didn't push the issue with Evan. It was just a cup of coffee, after all. If he wanted to decide for her, so be it. The reason she was here today was far more important.
Emma pulled out the finalized agreement. The law firm had already sent a copy to Evan; the one she had was a backup.
"Take a look. Point out anything you have a problem with."
As she spoke, Emma unlocked her phone and opened the voice recorder app.
