Once they were alone, Thomas looked at his daughter with a mix of frustration and concern. "Oh, my sweet, naive Melissa, how could it not be possible? A man like Evan, rich and young—do you think there's a shortage of young women throwing themselves at him? You were one of them!"
Thomas realized his mistake as soon as he said the last part, noticing the subtle shift in his daughter's expression.
He quickly corrected himself, "But, but you're definitely not like those other women. You must be special to him. Otherwise, why would he divorce his wife for you?"
As he said this, a look of pride and glory appeared on his face.
Melissa was stunned. She hadn't expected her father to know about Evan's divorce. She asked, bewildered, "Dad, how did you know he got divorced..."
She didn't remember telling him.
Thomas smiled mysteriously. "You thought you could keep it from your old man? Oh, my naive Melissa, your dad knows everything! Just think about it, he was willing to get a divorce for you. That shows just how special you are to him!"
Did Evan really divorce his wife for her?
That's impossible...
Melissa frowned, a worried look on her face. "No, Dad, don't spread rumors like that. His divorce has nothing to do with me."
"Nothing to do with you? How could it have nothing to do with you?"
Thomas patted her hand and said earnestly in a low voice, "Think about it. Has Evan ever been short of women in his life? When he was with all those other girls, did you ever hear him think about divorcing his ex-wife? But as soon as he met you, he got divorced. Doesn't that prove how important you are?"
