Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 234

Emma almost laughed out of frustration. Still, she managed to keep her composure, suppressing her anger as she asked, "What's wrong? How is it unfair to you?"

Evan tapped a finger on a section of the agreement on the table. "Two hundred and twenty-one million dollars. I'm sorry, but I don't have that much liquid cash at the moment. Besides, even if I did, such a large transaction going through my bank account would easily tip off the shareholders and company insiders about my divorce."

He folded his hands on the table in a defensive, negotiating posture and looked at Emma calmly. "You know I'm a businessman," he said coolly. "I can't do anything that would be detrimental to my company."

Heh.

So giving her 221 million was detrimental to his company?

Emma let out a sudden, cold laugh. "So? What's your point?"

Before Evan could speak, she added, "Honestly, I'd rather we not take this to court. You're a famous man. If word got out that you and your ex-wife were fighting over a bit of money in court after your divorce, it would be pretty embarrassing for you, wouldn't it?"

"My reputation?"

Evan smiled faintly. "I don't really care about such superficial things. After all, when it comes to reputation versus money, I know which is more important."

He chuckled softly before adding, "Besides, what we'd be fighting over in court is more than just a 'bit of money.'"

Now Emma understood. After all that talk, it all came down to him thinking 221 million was too much.

He wanted her to back down, to name a new price. But how could she? Emotionally, she couldn't get past it. Why should he be unwilling to part with a third of his assets after she had been with him for so many years, building the business with him from the very beginning?
