“What’s wrong, don’t you like it?”

Noticing the silence from the person beside him, Evan turned to look at Melissa.

“If you don’t like it, I can have Jason take you back to pick another one.”

“No, that’s not necessary…”

Melissa hugged the purse tighter and shook her head gently. “I love it. Thank you, Mr. Cooper…”

She said she was grateful, said she loved it, but her face showed none of it.

What terrible acting.

Evan thought to himself that she was even worse at it than Emma had been when she was young.

He inwardly scoffed at her clumsy performance, but on the surface, he forced a gentle expression and reached out to take her hand. “Are you unhappy, then?”

The man turned his head slightly to look at her, a soft smile playing on his lips. Outside the window, a brilliant orange sunset was beginning to paint half the sky.

The car was quiet, so quiet you could hear each other breathe. The soundproof doors of the Rolls-Royce separated the world inside the car from the one outside.

If time rewound two months, Melissa never would have imagined that she would one day be sitting in such a luxurious car.

It felt like a dream.

She looked at Evan, and the last remnants of disappointment in her heart slowly faded. “I’m not unhappy. I’m very happy. Thank you, Mr. Cooper…”

With that, she leaned toward him on her own, carefully resting her head in the crook of his arm.

Evan’s hand rested lightly on the girl’s shoulder. Through the thin fabric, he could feel the temperature of her skin. It was a bit chilly, almost cool.

Not like Emma, who was always warm, no matter the season. A comfortable and reassuring warmth.

Thinking of Emma, he remembered her stumbling figure as she left. He wondered how she was doing.

Evan looked out the window, the smile in his eyes completely gone.

After dropping Melissa off at her school, he immediately headed for the Ridgewood Estate.
