Eleven Years All to the Wrong Man novel Chapter 113

Evan got home early that day. When he arrived, Mrs. Alvarez was still in the kitchen cooking.

Emma’s shoes were in the entryway, but he didn’t see her anywhere on the first floor.

“Mrs. Alvarez, where’s Emma?”

Hearing his voice, Mrs. Alvarez emerged from the kitchen with a spatula in hand and a wide smile on her face. She pointed upstairs, then whispered mysteriously, “Sir, she’s resting in the room. You should try not to upset her so much from now on!”

Just then, the pressure cooker in the kitchen hissed, and before Evan could ask what she meant, Mrs. Alvarez hurried back to the kitchen.

Completely bewildered, Evan headed upstairs.

He figured Emma must not be feeling well today and hadn’t yet told Mrs. Alvarez they had signed the divorce application. But what did she mean by “try not to upset her so much”?

Still puzzled, Evan reached the second floor and pushed open the door to the master bedroom.

The room was quiet. Only a small night light was on, casting a dim, yellow glow. The underfloor heating radiated warmth, making the whole room feel cozy. The curtains weren’t fully drawn, leaving a small gap through which he could see the sky, now completely dark.

Evan walked over quietly. The woman on the bed was fast asleep, her eyes closed, her hands folded over her abdomen. Her brow would occasionally furrow, and she would murmur softly, as if caught in a bad dream.

Is she not feeling well?

Evan reached out and gently touched Emma’s forehead. No fever. Her temperature was normal.

Then why was she unwell?

Evan couldn’t understand it. Then he remembered what had happened at the city clerk’s office that morning. He guessed she was probably secretly grieving their divorce. Even though she acted like she couldn’t wait to be rid of him, deep down, she must be sad.

With that thought, Evan sat down on the edge of the bed.
