Emma touched her belly, her mind racing back over the past few weeks. The last time she and Evan had been together was over a month ago. If the test wasn’t wrong, the baby in her belly was already almost two months along.
Two months...
When she walked out of the bathroom and opened her bedroom door, Mrs. Alvarez was waiting anxiously in the hallway.
Seeing her, she immediately asked, “Ma’am, what did it say?”
Emma looked at Mrs. Alvarez, trying to force a smile and pretend everything was fine. But as she opened her mouth to speak, a sob caught in her throat. “I’m... I’m pregnant...”
“Really?! Oh, my! This is... this is wonderful news!”
Mrs. Alvarez clapped her hands in excitement. She had no idea that the couple had gone to the city clerk’s office that very morning to file for divorce. All she could feel was pure joy for Emma. “You should go rest. Does Mr. Cooper know yet? You should—”
“Mrs. Alvarez.”
Emma took Mrs. Alvarez’s hand, her body trembling slightly. “Could you please do me a favor and keep this a secret for now? I... I don’t want Evan to know about this just yet.”
Mrs. Alvarez was confused at first, but then she guessed that Emma wanted to surprise her husband. She readily agreed. “Don’t you worry, ma’am. I won’t say a word to Mr. Cooper. You can count on me!”
Knowing that Emma had suffered a miscarriage a year ago, she was now extra careful, gently guiding Emma back toward the bed.
As they walked, she advised her softly, “Ma’am, you have to be especially careful now. You just lie down. We’ll skip the fish soup. I’ll go make you something else right away!”
