Benjamin stared at her with intense gravity. "So you have to put me in that alliance. I'm the most qualified partner you could possibly ask for."
Maeve tried to shake him off, but he held on tight.
"I know you've been pushing me away on purpose. You don't want anyone to know about my connection to Charlie. Because you're terrified that if I die too, Charlie will have completely lost his only remaining family. I get it, Maeve. I know what you're trying to do. But avenging him isn't a burden you have to carry alone."
Maeve didn't waste any more breath arguing. "Once Grover Group holds their press conference, I'll finalize the partner list. If you're still interested then, come find me and show me what you bring to the table."
Eventually, Maeve sat back down and finished lunch with him.
As they were leaving, Benjamin offered to drive her back to campus, but she declined.
"Alright, I won't keep you from your classes," he said. "Call me whenever you need something. As for what I bring to the table..." He leaned in close to her ear. "I promise, I won't let you down."
As he whispered to her, Maeve's sharp instincts picked up on a pair of prying eyes watching her from the shadows.
Hoping to catch Maeve in a humiliating scandal, Nancy and her friends had intentionally canceled their private room. They had taken a table in the main dining area that gave them a perfect view of the entire restaurant.
The moment Maeve and Benjamin walked out, Nancy's group locked onto them.
The girls began whispering furiously.
