Chapter 468: Communications II

Kael’s end was silent, and for a tiny second, Athena thought the male had left her hanging—not until she heard a ruffle of movements in the background and knew that he was still on the line, just silent.

Why?

Was he calling to inform her of the next cruel stage in his evil plan?

Her eyes focused on the air, in the empty hallway, wishing for Ewan to appear—but her luck wasn’t in tonight.

"Are you going to talk, or not, Kael?" she asked at last, voice cold and edged.

Kael scoffed. "You must feel that you have won, right..."

And like that, Athena knew that the news had gone viral—the interview she had done with the reporter a couple of hours ago.

"I’m not going to ask how you got the cure... that’s boring... I’m not really interested in the semantics either... after all, I was warned of your brilliance."

"Thank heavens," Athena muttered during an interlude, her lips twisting faintly. Pleased that Fiona would remain safe, she was glad there would be no probing. They were attributing it to her luck and brilliance, not an infiltration of messages.

"I’m just here to inform you in person of the next threat hanging over your head."

Athena pursed her lips, frowning. Was Kael drunk? He sounded so. There was no composure either. Her finding the cure must have ruffled some feathers.

She smiled in satisfaction, a short, humorless chuckle escaping.

"You will get it coming for you..." the male slurred, making Athena laugh outright this time. She had just been worried for nothing. This male had nothing on Ewan’s dedication—or meanness really, when the time called for it.

"Oh, don’t worry... you won’t be laughing when I give you the fourth gift."

And then the call ended.

Athena looked at the phone when she took it away from her ear, slightly scared again. As much as a drunk Kael didn’t hold that much sway over her, his words did. Her mind went into overdrive, conjuring up possible meanings to his last words—possible gifts—yet she came up with nothing.

She exhaled and relaxed her back on the wall, eyes drifting shut briefly.

Quickly, she straightened when someone made an entry into the hallway.

Gianna.

"What are you doing here? Your fiancé is waiting downstairs."

The twins were at either side of her, holding her hands. They left her to hug Athena though, when they sighted the latter.

"Just resting," Athena murmured, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

Gianna raised a brow that suggested disbelief. "If you wanted to rest, you should take that up in your room. Or are you following Antonio home?"

Athena scowled, hinting with a look at the children nestled in her bosom.

Gianna shrugged. Not that the children were dimwits. But she left the topic. "I was just about to tuck them in. Do you want to do the honors?"

Athena nodded. "You can take them up. I will say my goodbyes to the guests. Give a toast somewhat, if that’s in the list."

Gianna nodded, congratulated her friend again, before beckoning on the children—who hesitantly left their mother and started toward their room.

In the living room, the music was a low, warm hum. And as Gianna had said, Antonio was waiting by the door with his friends.

"Hey..." she said softly, walking up to him, aware of her grandparents’ absence in the living room. Had they retired for the night?

Only Chelsea was there, with Aiden, Susan, and Ewan’s friends. Ciara must have retired too—with Kendra, Jessica, and Areso.

"Hey..." Antonio smiled down at her, gesturing to his friends to wait outside.

"You abandoned me for a minute there... Aiden had to give the closing toast."
