Chapter 481: Damning Consequence

Bustling, gentle knocks on her door woke Athena from a restless sleep. She sighed, opening her eyes, willing the knockers to go away, her head pounding insistently. But the knocks kept on.

Her children. She knew it was them.

What could they possibly want? She wondered, groaning as she sat up weakly in bed, wishing they could give her some space.

She cussed at the thought immediately. Since when did she start needing space from her own children?

She sighed and shouted, "I am coming!" Then trudged to the bathroom to rinse her face. When she came out and checked the clock, she frowned—it was just five a.m.

Why were they awake?

Before going to open the door—knowing the children would be drowning in impatience by now, yet having no choice—she opened her drawer, picked up the pill container, and downed two pills with the glass of water she had collected from the tap in the bathroom.

Pressing her thumb and index finger to her forehead, as if to get the chemicals to start work immediately, she sauntered to the door.

"Mom! What took you so long?" Kathleen started, barreling into the room with her brother.

Athena noticed that they hadn’t moved to hug her as before. As a matter of fact, they looked antsy—agitated even. Her brows furrowed. Had anyone informed them of something concerning Ewan? Maybe Ewan himself?

She scowled. Idiot. He wouldn’t dare. And if he did, she would make sure he paid for it. Hadn’t she told him not to make any contact with them unless it was his supposed day of visit?

"Mom, where is your mind? You seem—"

"I am fine. What are you both doing awake? Today is a school day..." she cut off Nathaniel mid-sentence, albeit gently.

It didn’t mean the latter was content with it though. If anything, he believed it confirmed what he and his sister had suspected.

"I woke first to ease myself," Nathaniel said quietly. "Couldn’t help but wake Kate when I saw our father kneeling outside, under the rain, looking pale as a ghost."

His gaze was fixed on Athena’s as he spoke, so he caught the scornful expression that lit his mother’s face—one that he hadn’t seen before. Not really. This was bitter. Worse than anger. It left him restless, uneasy.

Aware of his sister shifting on her feet, he knew she was going through the same dilemma.

"Mom..."

"That’s none of your business, Nathaniel. Go back to bed."

"It’s our business, Mom. He’s our father, and he hasn’t done anything wrong so far." Kathleen recovered from her speechlessness before her brother, but it didn’t make her any less shocked or nervous as she spoke to her mother.

"Or has he done something? Did he... hurt you?"

The little one shrank when her mother released a curse, eyes flashing with anger... and hurt.

So her father had hurt them again? Why?

Kathleen felt sorrowful—immensely so. Such that when Athena shouted her name—her full name—and asked her and her brother to go to their rooms, she turned and did walk away, trudging rather, a tear slipping past her eye.

Would she have no father again?

Meanwhile, Athena was shaking with anger. The audacity of her children. Maybe she had been too lenient with them—not strict enough?

She cussed under her breath, walking out of the room seconds later, tying her robe around her waist, muttering curses as she marched toward the living room—very ready to tell Ewan off for unsettling her children.

Fool. She cussed, blinking away the tears that stung her eyes. She would rather make him weep than weep herself.
