Chapter 483: Damning Choice

"Is this because of Ewan?"

When Antonio finally broke the silence, that was what he chose to ask. His tone was clipped, though a faint tremor betrayed something else beneath.

Maybe if he had known what had just upended Athena’s almost-perfect life hours ago, he wouldn’t have brought up that topic.

"Is it because of the few dates you shared with him, that you talk to me like this?" he continued, unaware of Athena seething quietly, unaware that she was connecting a few dots in her mind.

He had been stalking her?

In the few days of bliss she had enjoyed with Ewan, they had gone on short dates—mostly lunch, mostly at the obscure Italian restaurant tucked away in the old district. How could Antonio have known?

Wonders shall never end, Athena concluded, her lips twisting bitterly as she looked through the window while Rodney drove her toward the hospital.

She didn’t need to go to the lab today, not that she was particularly in the mood to be making vaccines. The city rolled past in slow motion—wet roads reflecting the grey morning light, people scurrying beneath umbrellas, the air thick with drizzle. She leaned her head against the window, exhaling slowly.

"You can’t talk, Athena? Cat got your tongue?" Antonio’s mocking voice buzzed through the speaker again, slicing through the low hum of the car.

Athena kept silent, though a spark of dark amusement flickered in her eyes. The swift change in Antonio’s tone didn’t surprise her anymore—it was almost predictable.

The calm gentleman was gone; what remained was a bear—wild, possessive, and dangerous. A bear that could tear one to shreds if he didn’t get what he wanted.

How hadn’t she seen it before?

Her fingers clenched into a fist on her lap as she thought about all the warning signs she’d chosen to ignore.

"And have you seen the news, Athena?" Antonio’s voice rose, sneering. "I told you he wasn’t to be trusted, but you chose rather to open your legs to him as a—"

"Don’t complete that statement, Antonio," she cut in sharply, her tone laced with venom. Her jaw tightened, and her eyes darkened dangerously. "Or else you might not live to see tomorrow."

She gritted her teeth, every muscle in her face twitching with the effort it took to keep her voice steady.

"And don’t call this number again," she added coldly, her voice dropping to an icy calm that made Rodney’s fingers tighten around the steering wheel. "I don’t even need the friendship again. I’m sure my children won’t miss you either."

And she ended the call, without waiting to hear another word from him.

For a few seconds, only the hum of the engine filled the silence. Rain pelted softly against the glass. Athena stared out the window, her reflection a blur of exhaustion and fury. Her fingers trembled briefly before she clasped them together on her lap, forcing herself to breathe.

Her thoughts churned. Antonio’s outburst—so unguarded, so cruel—didn’t hurt as much as it disgusted her. This was the man she had once thought she could trust, the one she’d believed to be decent.

How easily he’d turned vile the moment he realized she wasn’t his to control. The pity she had once felt for him withered, replaced by something sharper—resolve.

Her phone pinged suddenly, cutting through her thoughts.

She blinked, straightened, and glanced at the screen. A message notification.

It was only the news.

The headline blazed across the screen: "Chaos Erupts in Ewan Giacometti’s Company — Major Systems Breach, Suspected Hack."

Athena’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile.

She knew it wasn’t her children or Spider—neither would risk it. That meant it had to be the hacker who worked for the Grey sponsor. Her fingers hovered over the screen, her mind coldly calculating.

Still smiling wickedly, she unlocked her phone and quickly typed a message to Ethan: Merge my companies. Send me the paperwork—even if it’s doctored—to my email.
