Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 653

His words hit Charlotte like a bomb. He said he wanted to give up…

He said it so easily.

He was the one who had pursued her relentlessly, and now he was the one giving up.

She forced a laugh to hide the wave of emotion crashing over her. If there were a mirror, she knew she'd see a smile that looked more painful than tears. "You want to give up? Evander, what was all that before? Everything you said, everything you did... were you just playing me?"

"If this was how it was going to be, you should never have come back into my life! Now you have, and you think you can just walk away unscathed? On what grounds?!" Charlotte lost control of her emotions and shoved him angrily.

He stumbled back a few steps from the force but reached out to steady her. She slapped his hand away. "Answer me!"

His long lashes were lowered, his sharp jawline tight. After a long moment, he finally managed a single, hoarse phrase. "I've been holding you back."

His words were like an icy needle, stabbing straight into the softest part of her heart. The pain was so sharp it made her breath tremble.

She took a step back, her fingertips digging so hard into her palms that she could barely keep the tremor out of her voice. "I'm going to ask you one last time. Do you really want to end this? You'd better think carefully before you answer me, or else—"

"Yes," he interrupted, extinguishing her last spark of hope.

Charlotte swallowed the words she was about to say: "or else you'll never get to meet your son."

She had thought he was just speaking out of despair.

She had even considered that, with the Howard family's current situation, he might be pushing her away to protect her. She had wanted to tell him that no matter what happened, she would stand by his side...

But he gave her no chance.

Perhaps he really did want to break it off, to give up.

Whether it was the emotional turmoil or something else, a wave of nausea rolled through her stomach, making her feel deeply unwell.

And at that exact moment, she saw Judd.

Judd noticed her pale face and hurried over. She instinctively grabbed his arm, her face ashen. "Take me back."

Seeing Charlotte's pallor, Evander suddenly stepped forward and grabbed her wrist. "What's wrong?"

She pulled her hand away without looking at him. "You said it, Evander. We're over. Since I'm still in the Capital for a couple of days, let's go to city hall and get it done."
