The next morning, Charlotte threw up her entire breakfast in the bathroom.
Hearing the sounds, Hiram knocked on her door. "Sis, are you okay?"
When she didn't answer, he opened the door and found her slumped weakly beside the toilet. He rushed to her side. "I'm taking you to the hospital!"
He lifted her into his arms and had just stepped out of the room when he saw Lilith standing at the door. Before he could react, Lilith’s eyes fell on Charlotte, pale and clearly in distress. "What's wrong with her?" she demanded.
"No time to explain! I have to get my sister to the hospital!"
He hurried past Lilith and out the door.
"Hey, wait! I'm coming with you!" Lilith called, chasing after them.
In the emergency room hallway, Lilith and Hiram waited anxiously for news. Soon, a doctor emerged. "Who is the patient's family?"
Hiram raised his hand. "I am! She's my sister!"
"Does she normally have severe morning sickness?"
Hiram froze, unsure what to say. Beside him, Lilith asked in confusion, "What morning sickness?"
Hiram looked down, completely lost. "I... I don't know."
"Is the baby's father not here?"
"Doctor, are you saying she's pregnant?" Lilith asked, her voice sharp with shock.
The doctor gave them an exasperated look. "You're her family and you don't even know if she's pregnant? She's six weeks along. If she's always this sick, we'd recommend admitting her, running some tests on her urine and electrolytes to check for dehydration and imbalances."
