Genevieve discreetly averted her gaze, then turned to stare at the approaching Charlotte. Her dislike for Charlotte was as strong as ever.
If it weren't for her, their grandmother wouldn't have been so biased, Evander wouldn't have sent her abroad, and she wouldn't have been forced into this position with her parents.
Charlotte looked at Grandma Rosemary's memorial portrait and took a deep breath, struggling to keep her emotions in check. She stopped in front of Jacques, her voice hoarse. "Father."
Before Jacques could react, Lilith's mother, Madge, eyed her skeptically. "Is she...?"
"That's right! She's my sister-in-law's daughter-in-law," Ilse cut in, her voice sharp and loud. "She's the one who was causing all that drama with Evander last year, trying to divorce him. He almost died because of her! And come to think of it, the day Mom and my sister-in-law got in that accident, they were on their way to Eldermere City to see *her*!"
Ilse's outburst sent a wave of whispers through the crowd.
The newer servants, who had never met Charlotte but knew her by name as the wife of the eldest Howard son, were particularly intrigued.
"So that's the wife who made Mr. Evander leave home for six months?"
"She doesn't look like much. Why would the elder Mr. Howard be so devoted to her?"
Every word, whether contemptuous, surprised, or gossipy, reached Charlotte's ears. She knew perfectly well that Ilse was intentionally humiliating her and trying to turn the Sutherlands against her.
Sure enough, upon hearing Ilse's words, the elder Sutherlands turned to look at Charlotte, their expressions darkening.
Lilith wrung her hands, hesitating, wanting to step in and explain. But just as she made up her mind to defend Charlotte, a low voice cut in from behind. "Aunt Ilse, why deliberately attack an outsider? We are, in fact, divorced."
Charlotte spun around. Standing not far away was Evander, dressed in a black overcoat. He had just come in from outside and brought the chill of the winter air with him.
After several days apart, he had a dark shadow of stubble on his jaw, which only made his features look sharper and more defined. The usual warmth in his eyes was gone, replaced by a cold, unapproachable severity.
Ilse was taken aback by his cold stare, then managed a polite but awkward smile. "But I heard you two got engaged in Eldermere City."
"You're not in Eldermere City, Aunt Ilse, yet you seem to know everything that happens there," Evander replied pointedly.
Ilse was left speechless, her smile faltering.
