A strange, almost preposterous idea began to form in Charlotte's mind. Shane, oblivious to her thoughts, simply assumed she was racking her brain trying to figure out his connection to Wesley. His expression remained unchanged as he smiled faintly. "I'm quite envious of you," he said, his words laced with a meaning she couldn't quite grasp. With that, he turned and walked away, not waiting for her reaction.
By the time she snapped out of her confusion, he was gone. She was left puzzled by his parting words, but she didn't dwell on them. Right now, she was focused on verifying the theory that had just popped into her head.
…
The next day, Loretta and Elliot were out shopping. Since exchanging numbers on WhatsApp, they had been chatting frequently, and Elliot had made a habit of asking her out for meals and strolls. After a few days, Loretta found she didn't dislike his company. He wasn't as handsome as her Uncle Shane, but he was a good person—kind and funny.
Just as Elliot went to wait in line for bubble tea, Loretta's phone rang. It was Charlotte.
"Loretta, are you home?"
"I'm out right now, Charlotte. What's up?"
Charlotte hesitated for a moment. "I need to ask you for a favor. You're close with Uncle Shane, right? You can get into his place, can't you?"
"Of course," Loretta replied. She had free run of her uncle's house.
"Could you help me get one of his personal items? Like a used toothbrush?"
"Huh?" Loretta blinked, completely stunned. "Charlotte… what do you want with Uncle Shane's used toothbrush? That's… that's really creepy!"
Charlotte forced an awkward laugh. "It's not what you think! I'm working on an experiment, a study on gum health. I've already collected my brother's toothbrush, but I don't know your uncle well enough to ask, so…" She had no choice but to spin a wild tale.
