“Natalie didn’t tell me. I saw it when you were born. I was worried that couple would see the birthmark on you and realize you weren’t their child. But after many days, they never came looking. I figured they must have thought their eyes were playing tricks on them. I’ve always been so glad they never showed up, because it meant they were raising you as their own daughter.”
Marie stared at Kate Verdan, whose face was now weathered and lined with wrinkles. She was filled with disgust, and Kate’s words were driving her mad.
“You old hag, what the hell are you talking about? What do you mean ‘that couple’? That they’d know I wasn’t their child because of a birthmark? Are you trying to tell me again that I’m not my parents’ real daughter? Aren’t you people tired of using the same old tricks?”
Marie was hysterical. Seeing her so angry, Kate shrank back, a look of fear on her face.
She explained frantically, “My child, I never wanted to tell you, but I feel you have to know who you are. Otherwise, I’m afraid you’ll hurt your father.”
Kate hadn’t wanted to find Marie, let alone reveal their connection. She was afraid of disrupting the wealthy life Marie now enjoyed.
But what Natalie had told her filled her with dread. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the image of a father and daughter turning on each other. She couldn’t bear the thought of her daughter going to prison, nor could she watch her daughter cause her father’s death. That was why she had to tell Marie the truth about her parentage.
As long as Marie knew that Martin Doyle was her biological father, she would never harm him. And when Martin woke up, Kate would tell him that Marie was his real daughter. Then Martin would surely not accuse Marie of pushing him.
This family tragedy could be averted.
