Elaine was deeply moved. “Did you hear that, Richard? Marie doesn’t even want our fortune. And Natalie keeps claiming she harmed our son just to get her hands on the family money. That’s just ridiculous.”
“Mom, I would never hurt my brother, especially not for money,” Marie added.
Elaine’s guilt intensified. “Richard, do you hear her? Marie is our good daughter. She isn’t after our wealth. We were fooled by Natalie. We were manipulated. And after hurting her so badly, she doesn’t even blame us.”
Elaine’s words made Richard feel even more ashamed. “You’re right,” he said. “We went too far just now. We even hit her. We need to make it up to her.”
“Yes, we have to compensate our daughter. Nothing is too much.”
Marie fought to contain her elation.
“Mom, Dad, please don’t feel guilty. I know it’s not your fault; it’s Natalie’s. I don’t blame you at all. I know how devastated you are about my brother, and I truly don’t hold it against you. And please, don’t talk about compensating me. You’re my parents; you don’t owe me anything.”
“Our dear daughter,” Elaine said, “the more you say you don’t blame us, the more guilty we feel. Don’t worry, we will make it up to you. We are going to put all of the Ward family assets in your name, and we will tell everyone that you are the rightful president of the Ward Group.”
Richard nodded firmly. “Exactly. We’ll hold a press conference and make sure everyone knows.”
“Mom, Dad, that’s not a good idea.”
“What’s not good about it?” Elaine retorted. “Natalie is jealous of your status as Miss Ward, isn’t she? Well, now we’ll give her even more to be jealous about. Let her watch our daughter inherit our entire fortune. Let her look at her own pathetic background and just die of envy.”
