“Since you’re pleading for her, I’ll let it slide for now,” Elaine conceded.
“You can go,” Darren told Rowan. “We’ll call you again if we need you.”
Rowan practically fled, terrified they would change their minds and grab her again.
Elaine gently touched Marie’s cheek, which was still red from where she had slapped her. “My dear daughter, I’m so sorry,” she said, her voice thick with guilt. “I never should have doubted you. I’ve raised you for over twenty years. How could you not be my flesh and blood?”
Richard’s expression was grim. “We were too easily manipulated. From now on, we must stand firm. Marie is our daughter, and she would never harm our son. We can’t fall for Natalie’s tricks again.”
Marie put on a pitiful expression. “Mom, Dad, Natalie knows you’re still haunted by my brother’s death, so she keeps trying to pin it on me. That’s why she invented the story about me not being your biological daughter. It would give me a motive to hurt him, making it easier for you to believe her. Don’t blame yourselves. I almost believed it myself.”
“Our good daughter. I’m so glad you don’t blame us.”
“We have to make this up to you, sweetheart. In a few days, we’re going to host a grand gala. We’ll invite all the socialites and the press, and I’ll publicly announce you as the new head of the Ward Group.
From now on, the Ward Group and all the Ward family assets will be yours to manage. No one will ever be able to question your position again, especially not Natalie.”
Marie’s heart leaped with excitement. She was currently just the acting president of the Ward Group.
There had been no official ceremony or public announcement. But now, Richard wasn’t just planning a gala to declare her president in front of everyone; he was also handing over all the family assets. She would become the true, legitimate head of the Ward family.
