She used to do it to provoke Natalie, but now that Natalie and Darren were divorced, there was no point. She had no interest in wasting her time on childish things anymore.
"Hanley," Marie said, her face cold, "Auntie isn't the same as before. I'm the CEO of the Ward Group now. I have a lot of work to do, so I can't attend your school activities anymore. You need to be more understanding. Now, I have to get to work. Goodbye."
With that, Marie pushed Hanley aside. But even as she pushed him away, he didn't give up.
"Auntie, what I have to tell you is really important! It's not about school!"
Marie's patience had run out. She ignored him and kept walking.
Then she heard Hanley's voice from behind her.
"Auntie, they said you're not your mom and dad's real child."
Marie, who had already started walking away, froze in her tracks.
She was in disbelief, completely stunned.
Hanley saw his aunt stop and continued, "I heard them. They said you're not a Ward family child."
At those words, a wave of fury washed over Marie.
She strode back to him, wanting to rip the words right out of his mouth.
She gripped Hanley's shoulders tightly, her voice seething with anger. "Hanley, what are you talking about? What do you mean 'they' said I'm not my parents' child? Who is 'they'?"
Marie's grip was so tight it hurt Hanley's shoulders. "Auntie, I saw them," he whimpered. "My mommy and Terence came to the house."
Marie felt as if she'd been struck by lightning. She couldn't believe they would dare to show their faces here again.
Marie's rage boiled over, and she shook Hanley violently. "You knew about this! Why didn't you say something earlier? Why didn't you tell me at dinner?"
She was frantic. If Hanley had told her sooner, she could have been prepared. She wouldn't have let Elaine just pluck her hair out like that.
"Auntie, I tried to tell you," Hanley said, his voice trembling with tears. "But you wouldn't let me speak."
He was right. Victoria had been at the table, and the moment he'd brought it up, Marie had felt a sense of dread. She was terrified of her secret being exposed, especially in front of that old woman. She couldn't risk it.
So she had shut him up.
Overcome with fury, Marie slapped Hanley hard across the face.
"You idiot, Hanley! You're going to ruin me! You're going to ruin everyone!"
