"Marcus was very good to me. He'd give me anything I wanted. I'm so glad I had such a wonderful brother.
"It's a shame that Natalie was the one who killed him. Mom, Dad, don't worry. I will get justice for my brother. I won't let Natalie get away with this."
As Marie was speaking, she felt a sharp pain on her scalp, as if a chunk of her hair had been ripped out.
"Mom, what are you doing? That hurts!" she yelled.
Elaine seemed flustered. "Did I hurt you? It's my fault, all my fault. I was being too careless."
Marie was fuming. Yesterday, the maid had pulled her hair while styling it, and now her own mother was yanking it out. It was infuriating.
"Your mother didn't do it on purpose," Richard said.
Marie realized her tone had been harsh and quickly corrected herself. "I'm sorry, Mom. I know you've been emotionally unstable since brother's death. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have been so aggressive just now."
But Elaine looked somewhat dazed. "It was my fault for hurting you. I won't brush your hair anymore. I'll never brush it again."
Marie felt something was off about her words, but she couldn't pinpoint what it was.
"I'm sorry, Mom, I shouldn't have reacted like that. Please, keep brushing my hair," she said quickly.
Elaine clenched her fists tightly. "You're grown up now, you can do your own hair. And besides, two braids don't look good on you anymore. You should go. Your mother wants to sleep."
Marie was baffled. They had called her over specifically to braid her hair, but now they were stopping halfway and telling her to leave.
What was wrong with them? Were they losing their minds? From the looks of it, they really were.
She shook his hand off. "Auntie has a lot to do right now. Why don't you go play by yourself?"
Marie started to walk away, but Hanley stepped in front of her to block her path.
"Auntie, don't go. I really have something to tell you."
"Hanley, you were never this annoying before. What's gotten into you today?" Marie said impatiently.
Hanley stood his ground, refusing to let her pass. He said anxiously, "Auntie, I really have something very important to tell you."
Marie found it laughable. What important thing could Hanley possibly have to tell her? It was probably just another preschool event he wanted her to attend to show off for him.
