So that was why she pulled her hand away? To brush her hair?
Marie frowned. Why on earth did her mother suddenly want to do her hair?
Then again, her mother had been acting a little strangely since Marcus died.
She was always cooking his favorite meals, only to let them sit there untouched.
This desire to brush her hair was probably just another symptom of her unstable mental state.
"Mom, my hair is already tied up and it's not messy. It doesn't need brushing," Marie said with a smile.
But Elaine insisted, "I want to give you two braids, just like when you were little."
Marie's smile almost faltered.
What was this nonsense? Why would she want to give her pigtails? It was so tacky!
Marie forced a smile. "Mom, I'm all grown up now. I'm not a kid anymore. I don't need braids."
"In your mother's eyes, you'll always be a child."
Marie was speechless. She looked to her father, Richard, for help.
But Richard, contrary to his usual demeanor, said flatly, "Your mother wants to do your hair like when you were young, so just let her. She's been thinking a lot about when you and your brother were little. If braiding your hair makes her feel better, then let her do it."
"When you were in my belly, your brother would often touch my stomach and ask, 'Mommy, is my sister really in there?'
"One time, you kicked his little hand with your foot. That was the first time you two ever interacted.
"He was so happy. He said excitedly, 'Mommy, Mommy, my sister touched my hand! When she's born, I'll take good care of her. I won't let anyone bully her. I'm going to be the best brother in the world.'
"And after you were born, he never fought with you for our attention. He was never jealous, even if we held you all the time. He doted on you and spoiled you your whole life. When you grew up, he gave you whatever you wanted. Tell me, wasn't he the... best brother in the world?"
Elaine's constant talk of the past was already irritating Marie, but now, bringing up Marcus and imitating his voice made her even more agitated.
Why did she have to keep talking about a dead person?
