Terence said to Natalie, “You don’t have to pay them any mind. If you want to go to the parent-teacher conference as Hanley’s parent, then go. You’re his mother, after all.”
“He probably doesn’t even really want me to go.”
Natalie gave a self-deprecating laugh. Hanley had never once wanted her at any of his school activities, and now he was making bets about it.
What made him so confident she would show up?
He was so sure he could manipulate her, just like his father.
“Natalie, I’m sorry. I’m the one who caused this problem for you.”
Lucas had told himself that no matter how much Hanley annoyed him, he was still Natalie’s son, and he should show him some respect to avoid putting her in a difficult position.
But ever since he and his sister were accepted into the youth program at the Helios Institute for Advanced Minds, Hanley had been constantly trying to pick fights with them.
That day, he had insisted on making the bet, and Lucas had foolishly taken the bait.
Now that Natalie was living with them, he shouldn’t have needed to argue with him at all.
“It’s not your fault,” Natalie said, comforting him. “I know Hanley’s personality. Even if you hadn’t agreed, he would have declared the bet on his own.”
Natalie’s words made Lucas feel a little better.
She gently stroked his head. “You don’t need to feel guilty. Even if I don’t go to his conference, someone else will.”
It was always Marie who went. If she didn’t go, Marie would.
Terence added, “Since someone will be at his conference, you don’t have to go that day. If you don’t show up for either of them, then neither side loses the bet.”
Terence didn't want Natalie to feel conflicted, nor did he want his own children to emotionally blackmail her into attending their event.
