“Then I’ll have to trouble you,” Natalie said to Terence.
“It’s no trouble at all. I’ll have the driver go to the Cross estate now.”
Over the phone, Hanley heard the conversation between his mom and that man, and he was stunned.
He quickly said, “Mommy, it’s okay! You know I’ve never liked to trouble people. It’s fine, the nanny is here, so I’m not scared. And Daddy will probably be back soon. Don't worry about it.”
“Are you sure you’ll be okay?”
Lucas piped up from the side, “Hanley, you don’t have to be shy. If you’re scared of the dark and want your mommy, just let our driver come get you. We have plenty of room for you to stay over.”
Hanley snapped, “No, thanks. I don’t need to. Mommy, I have kindergarten tomorrow, so I’m going to go get ready for bed now. Bye, Mommy.”
Hanley hung up the phone, grinding his teeth in frustration.
His whole pity act had been ruined by Lucas and the others.
How was he supposed to get a chance to see his mom and convince her to come to the parent-teacher conference with him now?
He had a bet with Lucas, and if he lost, it would be humiliating.
After Hanley hung up, Natalie felt an uneasy feeling in her heart.
“Natalie, was he just too embarrassed to come over? I can go with you to pick him up if you want.”
“It’s fine. If he doesn’t want to come, let’s just leave it.”
Just then, Lucas spoke up, looking a bit awkward. “Natalie, there’s something I need to tell you.”
“What is it?”
