"Even though Marie planned the whole thing, Natalie is the one who gave birth to him. The fact that she's here must mean the Cross family still has a place for her, even after the divorce."
The whispers from the crowd infuriated Marie, but she suppressed her anger and signaled for the cake to be brought out.
She wanted people to praise her for being generous, not to speculate that the Cross family still had a place for Natalie.
She was about to show everyone that Natalie had no right to come up and cut the cake. She would prove to everyone that there was no place for her in the Cross family.
The cake was rolled out, and Marie looked at Darren, gesturing for him to come up for the cake-cutting.
Darren turned to Natalie. "It's time to cut the cake. Let's go up together."
Natalie replied, "All of us on stage? Don't you think it would be a little crowded?"
One family, two matriarchs. What a joke.
"Natalie, are you determined to be this difficult?"
Natalie refused to move. Just then, Victoria walked over and nudged Darren.
"Darren, hurry up and cut the cake. Haven't you given people enough of a show to laugh at the Cross family for one night?"
Darren knew Natalie wouldn't go on stage. He had pleaded with her again and again, but she remained obstinate.
Furious, Darren went up on stage to cut the cake. Victoria turned to Natalie with a sneer. "Natalie, you're divorced from my son. Why did you shamelessly show up at Hanley's birthday party? Trying to get back in our good graces? Forget it. You didn't spend a dime on this party. It was all Marie's money. You have some nerve mooching off her hard work."
