Evelyn paled. “What do you mean?”
“You’re the one who brought us here! You went ahead with something you weren’t even sure about? If anything happens to us, I’ll haunt you for the rest of your life!”
“No, no…” Daniel quickly explained. “It’s just that I slept too deeply. I’ve never slept so soundly before. I didn’t feel a thing, and then suddenly it was morning.”
“Maybe you were just exhausted,” Isabel said. “My sense of smell is quite sensitive. If there were any drugs, I would have smelled them.”
“It could have been in the food,” he suggested.
Daniel rubbed his head. “You think so…?”
Evelyn laughed. “You work for a machine like Adrian, a total workaholic. It’s normal for you to crash like that.”
“Even machines break down when they run nonstop, let alone a person.”
“You should take this chance to rest for a few days. The air here is good, even if it is remote.”
Daniel nodded. “That’s a relief…”
He had been terrified. If anything had happened to Isabel, he would never be able to forgive himself.
Since it was a false alarm, he didn’t mention it to Adrian when he reported in.
They had originally planned to be on their way back within a week. But two days had passed, and they still hadn’t seen the man.
Isabel was losing her patience. “Daniel, if that man doesn’t see me tomorrow, I’m not staying any longer. Nothing you say will change my mind.”
“I’m starting to suspect that you and Adrian are working together to run out the cooling-off period for the divorce.”
Daniel quickly explained, “That’s really not it, Ms. Hayes. Mr. Blackwell wouldn’t use the same tactic twice. He knows you wouldn’t be happy about it. Since he’s decided to try a different approach to winning you back, he wouldn’t make such a foolish mistake again.”
But seeing him now, with his scholarly air, it all made sense. Though he hadn’t met them personally, his arrangements had been meticulous and thoughtful.
“Isabel Ashford,” she said, introducing herself first.
The man just poured her a cup of tea. “There’s no need for names. We won’t be meeting again. As for your reputation, I’m well aware of it, as are the people here.”
Isabel didn’t react. “Good, I don’t want to waste time either. I’ve already been delayed three days because of you. Say what you need to, and then I’m going back to Westbridge. I have work to do.”
The man didn’t seem offended. “I just wanted to see you for myself, to get a measure of you. You can leave now. I won’t keep you for dinner.”
“You…!” Evelyn started to say, but Isabel stopped her.
“I know what you’re thinking,” Isabel said calmly. “Before a drug goes to market, during clinical trials, you need test subjects to gather data.”
“So you’re afraid I’ll use the people here as guinea pigs, only to turn around and provide the drug to the wealthy. After all, this drug is a lifesaver for cancer patients, the research process is complex, and the cost is enormous. It’s impossible to mass-produce it like other medicines.”
