“What do you mean?”
Julian didn’t elaborate, turning and heading back inside.
The rain continued to fall as Adrian stood alone in the yard.
Perhaps the medicine Isabel had given him was working, because he didn’t feel as sick anymore.
He looked up at the second-floor room with the balcony; the lights were off.
After a moment of thought, he turned and left.
Upstairs, Evelyn was hiding behind the curtains. When she saw Adrian leave, she immediately told Isabel.
Isabel was lying in bed with her eyes closed. She didn't open them or respond when Evelyn spoke.
Evelyn climbed into the bed and poked her shoulder.
“I know you’re faking.”
“You’re the one keeping me awake.”
Evelyn propped herself up against the headboard. “You’re so distant with me now.”
“Sigh, things were so much better when we were kids. We didn’t have so much to worry about. We used to tell each other everything.”
Isabel didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Seeing that sleep was now impossible, she sat up too.
“What is it you want to hear?”
“I want to hear what you’re really thinking right now.”
Isabel rubbed her forehead. “Would you believe me if I said I don’t know?”
Evelyn replied, “I guess I’d have to.”
Isabel sighed, frustrated. “I really haven’t figured it out yet. My main focus right now is X-1. With Adrian’s network opening up, demand is going to surge. But Felix Lane and Edmund can’t perfectly replicate what I made.”
“I only managed to produce a few successful batches of that version of X-1. Now when I pick up a test tube with my right hand, the results are about the same as theirs.”
Evelyn was surprised. “Not even Edmund can do it? Isn’t he a genius? You taught him every single detail.”
“I did. He was with me in Westbridge for three months, and I was constantly teaching him. But the formulation is… well…”
Isabel’s head throbbed. “Maybe it’s because he’s still young. His technique isn’t quite there yet.”
Evelyn said, “Then you haven’t been strict enough. Train him more. It’s not impossible for him to learn it perfectly.”
It was something that couldn’t be rushed.
