Isabel leaned closer to Julian, whispering, "Is that enough?"
"Should be." Julian lowered his head slightly. "Count to ten."
"Why?" Isabel asked, confused.
Julian just raised an eyebrow and started counting to himself. He shifted his head from the right to the left.
From Isabel's position, blocked by him, she had no idea what he was doing.
But from Adrian's angle, it looked like something else entirely.
He managed to hold back, though. He didn't charge out.
He knew that if he did, she would only get angry.
It's just a kiss, he told himself. It's fine.
Once she loves me again, this won't happen.
…
"Let's go back inside." Julian put his arm around her shoulders as they walked in, a meaningful smile on his face.
Isabel wasn't that curious. Once they were inside, she slipped out from under his arm and went upstairs to bed.
She didn't know that Julian had created a group chat to coordinate everything.
He didn't sleep that night, watching Adrian standing outside.
He found it rather amusing.
The next morning, after a breakfast prepared by Martha, Isabel left the two boys at the villa, telling them not to fight.
"We won't," Edmund said dutifully. "I won't do anything that makes Mommy unhappy. Unless it's a special situation."
"Like if my brother hits me first."
Oliver, seeing the look on Isabel's face, quickly said, "Don't try to make me look bad. I'm still on probation."
Isabel turned to him, pretending she had no idea he'd been following them. She narrowed her eyes. "What are you doing here? How did you get in?"
Adrian certainly wasn't going to tell her how he got in.
He only answered her first question. "I had some business to take care of here."
Isabel pressed, "What kind of business do you have in the Fiorhaven Principality? Isn't your international project based in the Ysolde Empire?"
"You followed me here, didn't you?"
"And all that talk about waiting for the cooling-off period to end, about giving me a divorce for sure, about not bothering me… having Daniel come work with me… it was all a ploy, wasn't it? One step back to take two steps forward?"
"No…" Adrian tried to explain quickly. "I really did have some business here. I knew you were traveling with the kids, so I came to check on you."
His eyes flickered to Julian, then he took a step toward Isabel. "I will absolutely do what I promised. But you and I are still legally married. Even if you've fallen for someone else, you shouldn't be so openly intimate with another man. It's not good for your reputation."
She and Julian had known each other for years. Aside from putting an arm around her shoulder for show, they had never done anything inappropriate.
