Aurora Walton and Lucas Carter novel Chapter 1615

Otherwise, he would never have said those things.

Hearing Yvonne’s words, a dull ache spread in Edwin’s chest.

He hadn’t expected her to think of herself that way—to believe that in a man’s eyes, a woman could only ever be a tool or a source of profit.

If that was truly how she saw the world, then wasn’t that far too sad?

Edwin had always thought of himself as a ruthless man in business—sharp, decisive, even cold at times.

But at least he held to his principles. He never let anyone dictate what he believed.

Yet hearing Yvonne speak like this made him feel as though everything he once believed had been shaken.

Her view of love and worth was just too bleak.

He sighed quietly. “Yvonne, what happened to you? When did you become like this?

“Don’t you know that real love still exists in this world?”

She laughed bitterly. “Love? Do you really think I know what that feels like? Have I ever even seen it? Or had it, for that matter?”

The sharp questions came one after another, and then she tipped her glass back, draining the rest of it.

The burn of the liquor seared down her throat, dulling the ache in her head.

“Love?” she scoffed, voice trembling. “Don’t you think that’s a joke?”

She motioned for another drink. “I stayed by Lucas’ side all these years, and not once did he ever spare me a second glance. Everything between us was all just my own wishful thinking.”

She downed another glass, her cheeks flushed now, and her words began to slur slightly as the alcohol took hold.
