She clutched Edwin’s shirt tightly, her voice trembling between anger and heartbreak.
“Why won’t you just give me a chance? I’m the one who’s truly right for you! Why are you treating me like this? Don’t you care what people will think about us?”
“What’s so great about Aurora anyway? She’s fooled you. Can’t you see it? She’s calculating and manipulative, not at all what you think she is.
“Lucas, can’t you just look at me… just once?”
Her voice cracked, and tears streamed down her cheeks, glistening under the dim bar lights.
Edwin’s chest tightened as he watched her crumble. He’d stayed by her side for years, quietly and faithfully, so seeing her like this tore at him in ways he couldn’t admit aloud.
But what could he say now? She was draped over him and trembling, clinging as if her life depended on it. He sat frozen, his body stiff, unsure what to do.
Still, he tried to break through the haze clouding her mind. “Yvonne, look at me. Look carefully and see who I am. You’ve got the wrong person.”
He liked her, that much was true, but not like this. He wanted to take things slowly and earn her trust, not take advantage of her while she was too broken to think clearly.
For all his flaws, Edwin had his own principles.
He wasn’t a saint, but neither was he the kind of man who’d exploit someone’s pain. If he did that tonight, he knew he’d never be able to face her again.
After all, they had grown up together, shared years of history.
He couldn’t betray that.
