Janina rushed to the freezer for ice, dropping the cubes into a basin of water.
West kept a firm grip on Wendy's hand, moving it from under the faucet into the basin of ice water.
The bone-chilling cold instantly enveloped her burning skin.
Only then did Wendy feel the searing pain begin to subside slightly.
It still hurt, but it was a little better than before.
“Hang in there,” Maggie said, standing nearby. She wanted to touch the burn but didn't dare, just tutting at the red, swollen skin.
“How did this happen? You almost turned your hand into a roasted ham.”
Though she was joking, Maggie's heart ached for her. She was just trying to lighten the mood and distract Wendy from the pain.
“Shut up,” Wendy managed a slight smile at her friend's joke, then winced in pain. “You'll be the first one to get a piece of my roasted hand.”
Melody was on her phone, Googling first aid for burns, and reading the results aloud: “Continuous cold compress for half an hour, then seek medical attention… Hey, Nina, do you have enough ice? If not, I can order some right now.”
Janina, who had just added another ice cube to the basin, rolled her eyes. “Why don't you just put Wendy in the walk-in freezer?”
“Not a bad idea,” Maggie chimed in. “Wendy can lie there like some kind of ice queen. Maybe she'll even develop superpowers.”
As the girls were bickering, Wendy suddenly felt the hand gripping her wrist tighten. She turned her head and realized how close she and West were, standing shoulder to shoulder.
His arm was protectively around hers.
West realized it too. The tips of his ears turned bright red, and he loosened his grip on her wrist.
Her hand in the ice water was still throbbing. Wendy wasn't in the mood to overthink things and just said, “A few more minutes should be enough.”
“No, look, it's already blistering.”
“Does it hurt?” West asked, his face full of concern.
