"Quick, find West! Check upstairs!" Janina whispered urgently to Wendy. They couldn't stall any longer; they had to fight their way out.
The bodyguards were focusing their attack on Maggie and Kenneth, recognizing them as the strongest fighters.
Kenneth and Maggie worked together seamlessly, their coordinated punches and kicks forcing the men in black to retreat.
Marjorie, already weak, tried to run upstairs, but Janina grabbed her by the hair from behind, yanking her to the ground.
Janina's boxing lessons had paid off; she could handle Marjorie easily. But mindful that Marjorie had AIDS, Janina was hesitant to touch her directly. After overpowering her, she tore a piece of fabric from Marjorie's clothes and used it to tie her hands behind her back.
Meanwhile, Wendy searched two rooms before she finally found West.
He was in a terrible state, on the verge of a complete breakdown.
"West, what's wrong? The police are almost here, just hang on."
Wendy didn't know what had happened to him, but right now, all she could think about was getting him out of there.
Through a hazy fog, West saw Wendy running toward him. The desire to give up was replaced by a sudden, fierce will to live.
Wendy helped West up from the floor and felt his body burning up. She assumed he had a fever from Marjorie's abuse.
A faint, sweet scent filled his nostrils, and her hair brushed against his cheek, making his throat tighten.
The moment Wendy's cool fingers touched his arm, West's scorching skin felt like it had been set on fire. He trembled, grabbing her wrist.
A jolt like an electric current shot through his body, and his rationality teetered on the edge of a whirlpool of desire.
West bit his tongue hard, trying to stay lucid.
He shoved Wendy away. "Don't touch me!"
He spoke so quietly that Wendy didn't hear him clearly.
Startled by the push, Wendy thought he had mistaken her for Marjorie. She grabbed his arm again, quickly explaining, "West, it's me! I'm Wendy Clifford, Nina's friend. We're here to rescue you. Hang in there, the police are coming."
