“Yes, I’m sure. I can handle it,” Janina said firmly, worried he might turn her away.
“Have you ever trained before?” Baker asked.
“No, but a friend taught me a few self-defense moves.”
Maggie had shown them some basic techniques before, but compared to professional training, their moves were amateur at best.
Baker looked up and handed Janina a pair of boxing gloves. “Alright, let me see what you’ve got.”
He still hadn’t decided whether to take her on as a student. He had a good reputation to maintain.
Janina exchanged a glance with Natalie, surprised that signing up for a boxing class felt like an audition.
But she didn't object. She put on the gloves as Baker grabbed a striking pad and got into position.
“So, I just hit it like this?” Janina asked, mimicking punches she’d only seen on TV.
Baker pointed to the pad. “Aim here.”
Janina copied the stance of boxers she’d seen on television and began to strike, pouring all her strength and focus into her fists.
One punch.
Two punches.
As the images of her kidnapping flashed through her mind, her punches became fiercer.
It wasn't that she was weak-willed; it was her body that had failed her. She hoped it wasn't too late to change that.
Baker was surprised. The woman who looked so delicate had a lot of power behind her punches. While she lacked raw strength, it was something that could be developed with training.
This student, he decided, was worth taking on.
Unaware that she had already won the owner’s approval, Janina continued to punch until, after a dozen more strikes, she was completely exhausted.
“It’s because you’re a good teacher,” Janina replied with a smile, though she knew her own capabilities. She decided that whenever she had time, she would come twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
Boxing would not only build her strength but also teach her how to protect herself. She was truly afraid now, knowing that when you’re in a desperate situation, you can only rely on yourself.
After the lesson, Janina dropped Natalie off at her makeup shop and then drove straight home.
Five days later, a flurry of messages popped up in the friends’ group chat.
Melody sent a location pin and a secretly taken photo:
[Yvonne is out shopping with some woman. They’ve been at it since this afternoon and have bought a ton of luxury goods. They’re really living it up!]
Wendy Clifford: [Should we lure her out? Beat her up? That’s too good for her. She needs a lesson she’ll never forget!]
Maggie: [That’s the idea. I’m following them now. Don’t worry, everything is under control. Nobody make a move until you hear from me.]
