Janina couldn't imagine being caught outside in a storm like that. The typhoon would have swept anyone off their feet.
“I was resting in a small shelter near the shack. I saw two men carrying you inside. I recognized you, but I didn't know what they were planning. I listened by the window and heard them talking about killing you.”
Yesterday, Able Tam had been taking shelter from the storm when the two unwelcome visitors arrived. The place was an abandoned construction site, and the shack was usually empty.
He wanted to call the police, but there was no signal. While he was trying to scout out the situation, his phone fell into a puddle and died. He had no choice but to wait until the middle of the night, when the two men were asleep, to attempt a rescue.
Janina felt a deep sense of gratitude. “Thank you so much,” she said sincerely. “My brother and sister will be here soon. Please, let us take you to dinner.”
If it hadn’t been for Able Tam, she might not have escaped so easily. He had saved her life twice now, and she was truly grateful.
Able Tam waved his hand. “Dinner’s not necessary. Since your family is coming to get you, I should be on my way.”
He stood up to leave, but Janina quickly stopped him.
“Able Tam, wait. Where are you going? Where’s your home? Let me take you home after dinner.”
Able Tam paused, looking at Janina with surprise. “You’ll take me home? Ha. That’s the first time anyone’s ever said that to me. The whole world is my home.”
Janina suspected that something must have happened to Able Tam. He was too young to be a beggar, and besides…
