Ding!
The elevator door opened.
“Miss Lockhart, take care on your way back,” Nathan said politely, his tone unusually formal.
As soon as Xavia got out of the elevator, Nathan headed upstairs. His posture was indifferent, as if they were strangers that would never meet her again.
Xavia froze in front of the elevator door. Her heart felt like it was being crushed, and it was almost difficult to breathe.
She had a feeling that Zivon was already far out of her reach…
“Xavia!” Dolly’s voice suddenly rang out, and she ran up and hugged Xavia’s arm. “What a coincidence, you’re here too? …Eh? What happened? Did someone bully you?”
Xavia looked at her best friend that she had not seen for quite a while. Her throat felt tight as she said softly, “Dolly, it’s over between Young Master Burton and I.”
“Huh?” Dolly was surprised for a moment. She wanted to ask Xavia if anything had even begun, but suddenly, tears started rolling down Xavia's cheeks. Dolly's eyes widened and she became flustered. “Oh dear, don’t cry. Come with me.”
Dolly took Xavia to a quiet resting spot in the garden and asked her to explain.
After listening to the whole story, Dolly was stunned. “Why would you test him like that?”
Xavia choked out bitterly, “I always thought he was just playing around, so when Hartley brought it up, I thought I should gamble on it. But… I did not expect that I would cause so much pain.”
Dolly sighed and explained patiently, “Think about it—you teamed up with an outsider to test Young Master Burton. That was not only disrespectful towards him, but it also meant that you did not trust him at all and have misunderstood him from the very beginning.”
“You firmly believe that Young Master Burton’s feelings for you are not real, and that is the most hurtful thing to him.”
“Moreover, a pregnancy is such a big deal—how could you joke about it like that? The both of you had caused the loss of a life, and you made Young Master Burton feel worried and distressed over his lost child for days and nights.”
“After all that, you told Young Master Burton that it was all just a test and a scheme. To be honest, the fact that Young Master Burton did not strangle you on the spot is already considered very benevolent.”
Xavia remained silent. She only felt that she was wrong before this, but after listening to what Dolly said, it seemed as though she had really gone too far…
