Silvia still had work to do at the office, so after a brief exchange with Finn, she headed out without lingering.
But as soon as she reached the lobby, she spotted Shipley standing right by the front entrance.
The moment she saw him, Silvia’s instincts kicked in—she swung her car around, intending to leave the moment she could. The last thing she wanted was to be left alone with him. To her, Shipley now looked every bit the unstable lunatic.
But Shipley noticed her car instantly. Before she could react, he darted out in front of her, recklessly throwing himself into her path.
He was acting like he didn’t care what happened to him, but Silvia had no intention of letting her car become a murder weapon. She slammed on the brakes, the hood of the car coming to a jarring stop just inches from Shipley’s legs.
If she’d hesitated even a second, he would have been hit.
Silvia’s hands gripped the steering wheel, her fingers drumming against the leather as a cold, hard glint flashed in her eyes.
After spending so much time around Kent, Silvia had picked up some of his edge—right now, you could see it all over her.
With a sharp bang, she flung open the car door and strode out, heels tapping hard against the pavement as she marched straight up to Shipley.
For all the difference in their size, Silvia didn’t seem even a bit intimidated. If anything, she seemed to tower over him, her presence pressing him down.
She took in the pallor on his face, then, without warning, raised her hand and slapped him hard across the cheek.
“Shipley, have you lost your mind?” she snapped, her voice shaking with fury.
She wasn’t angry that he wanted to die—she was furious that he wanted to drag her down with him.
She glared at him, her eyes blazing with outrage, but Shipley just gave an abrupt, unsettling laugh.
He stared right at her, a crooked smile curling his lips as he gingerly touched the side of his face where she’d struck him.
Shipley spoke softly, ignoring the curious stares gathering around them.
By now, he’d learned a thing or two about shamelessness from Vianne.
