Since that last, unpleasant encounter with Nannie, Silvia hadn’t seen her for quite some time.
Just as Silvia was finally starting to push the woman out of her thoughts, Nannie suddenly appeared again.
She glanced at Kent, noting the calm on his face. Silvia opened her mouth, searching for something appropriate to say, but the words wouldn’t come.
Was she supposed to tell Kent that she’d make room for them?
What a joke.
She, after all, was Kent’s lawful wife.
“Nannie, out.”
Kent lifted his gaze, his eyes narrow and cool, a warning flickering beneath the surface.
His tone grew heavier. “Did you forget what I told you last time?”
Kent had warned her—if Nannie showed up again and tried to stir up trouble with Silvia, he’d have her sent abroad for treatment.
The reminder clearly struck home. Nannie stared straight at Kent, jaw clenched. But the tension didn’t last. In the next instant, she smiled, that same sweet smile she’d worn the very first time Silvia met her.
Nannie turned her attention from Kent to Silvia, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “Well,” she said brightly, “since I see Kent’s in good hands, I guess I don’t need to worry. Miss Ashford, would you mind walking me downstairs?”
Her voice was gentle, but there was a hint of challenge beneath the politeness.
Silvia looked to Kent. His brow was furrowed, irritation darkening his expression. He spoke, his voice clipped, “Nannie, are you not able to make it downstairs by yourself?”
“Kent!”
