“If anything like this ever happens again, just tell them my name. I’ll stand up for you.”
With that, Latham strode out of the room, leaving Dorothea frozen in place.
She felt her heart twist. Other than Grandma, no one had stood up for her in such a long time. Was Latham really this kind to everyone, or was it just her?

“What do you mean, The Stephens Group got it?” Layton’s face turned almost pitch black as he listened to his assistant’s report.
He didn’t hesitate before calling Elise. “Elise, did you take care of that thing I asked? The one about smoothing things over with Dorothea?”
Elise’s heart skipped a beat. “What’s wrong, Layton? Did something happen?”
Layton sounded impatient. “Today, Latham snatched up that piece of land we were after. I’d already settled things with the seller, but now they say it’s off the table. Turns out, it’s because of Latham.”
Yesterday’s slap flashed through Elise’s mind. She’d just hit Dorothea, and now Latham was already getting revenge?
Would Latham really go this far for Dorothea?
Elise felt her whole body tense up. “Layton, maybe give it some time. What if he’s just planning to give it to you as some sort of peace offering?”
Layton almost laughed from sheer frustration. “Elise, you’re almost fifty. Can you please stop being so naive? Stay put. I’m coming home right now.”
He couldn’t explain everything over the phone, so he rushed home in less than half an hour.
When he saw Elise looking lost and miserable, his brow furrowed. “What exactly did you say to Dorothea?”
Elise’s eyes were rimmed red. “She wouldn’t listen to anything I said. She fired back at me with every word… I just couldn’t take it, so I slapped her yesterday.”
