At dinner, Albert barely touched his food. His mind was somewhere else entirely.
Carola noticed right away. He’d been acting weird ever since he rushed out and then came back to the restaurant. She wanted to ask whether he’d just gone to grab something or if he’d actually gone after someone. And if he had, who was it?
Suddenly, Albert broke the silence. “Carola, do you know who Dorothea is engaged to?”
Carola’s heart dropped. She didn’t even need to ask. The answer was obvious.
She just didn’t get it. Dorothea was gone, so why was Albert still so obsessed with her? What did Dorothea do to make him act like this? Wasn’t Carola supposed to be the person he cared about most?
Trying to sound casual, she said, “Albert, after Dorothea broke things off with the Stevens family, Mom and Dad pretty much stopped mentioning it at home. But I heard she’s already engaged. Maybe she’s even married and just waiting for the ceremony. I bet the guy has something to hide. Maybe he’s even more of a player than Mr. Stevens was.”
Honestly, Carola hoped Dorothea had ended up with someone terrible. That way, she’d always be able to feel like she came out on top.
Albert frowned as he listened, clearly deep in thought.
Carola couldn’t help herself. “Albert, did you see Dorothea just now?”
He hesitated for a split second before shaking his head. “No. Don’t overthink it. I’ve already got someone working on our wedding rings. Where do you want to take our wedding photos?”
That made Carola feel a little better. At least he still wanted to marry her.
“Albert, we don’t have to rush the photos. When you have time, do you want to go get our marriage license?”
Carola knew she shouldn’t have been the one to bring it up, but she just couldn’t wait anymore. The longer things dragged on, the less sure she felt about Albert’s feelings.
He looked surprised, almost caught off guard. He thought for a moment, then said, “Carola, we don’t need to hurry. Let’s wait until I’m done with work for a bit, okay? Besides, I haven’t even proposed to you properly yet.”
Carola felt her heart slowly warm up again.
“Alright, Carola. You shouldn’t have to bring this up yourself. Just wait for me, okay?”
She ducked her head, cheeks flushing. “Okay, I’ll listen to you.”
After reassuring her, Albert’s thoughts drifted far away. Did he really want to go through with marrying Carola?
