But Latham...
Honestly, Latham’s reputation in their circle was even worse than Albert’s.
Dorothea just shrugged. “There’s nothing to feel bad about. Latham and I got married by chance. It’s just a deal. We both get what we want. We signed a contract for a year, and after that, we’re getting a divorce.”
“I got all the shares of my dad’s hotel, and he gets to keep his family off his back. As for his scandals, I couldn’t care less.”
Carmen nodded in understanding. “But Dorothea, does Albert know about this?”
Everyone knew Latham and Albert hated each other’s guts. The Stephens and Clark families had been feuding for years. If Albert ever found out that Latham married Dorothea, he would probably lose his mind.
“Whatever. It doesn’t matter if he knows or not. He’s marrying someone else now anyway. He’s the one who cheated first. If Albert regrets it someday, that’s his own fault.”
Carmen thumped her chest. “Dorothea, don’t worry. I won’t say a word, not even to Albert. Honestly, I just want to see his face when he finds out you married his enemy. That would really piss him off.”
Dorothea couldn’t help but laugh.
She never planned on using Latham to get back at Albert. From the very beginning, she just wanted those shares.
“It feels so much better to finally say all this out loud.”
She’d been holding it in for way too long.
“Dorothea, I might be useless, but if Latham ever tries to mess with you, I won’t let him get away with it. Seriously, you have to be careful. Their crowd plays dirty. A lot of them have... issues.” Carmen caught herself and quickly changed tack. “Not that I’m badmouthing your husband or anything. I just mean, if it’s just a marriage on paper, that’s fine. But don’t let it get any deeper, okay?”
Dorothea suddenly remembered the kiss from yesterday. Her cheeks warmed, a soft flush spreading across her face.
“Don’t worry, I won’t.”
A kiss wasn’t enough to make her fall for someone. Not anymore.
Dorothea had already lost the ability to love first.
