When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 59

Dorothea bit into her pear and said, “Alright, I hear you.”

She was planning to relax at home that afternoon, but those plans disappeared the second her phone rang. The call was from the care center—her grandmother. Without even thinking, Dorothea threw on a jacket, grabbed her car keys, and rushed out the door.

Pauline couldn’t wrap her head around why things between Dorothea and Elise had gotten so tense lately.

“Elise, when Dorothea gets here, please just talk to her calmly. She really is a devoted daughter. She wants to be close to you, but you always keep her at arm’s length. If this keeps up, you two are just going to drift further and further apart.”

Back when Dorothea was younger, Pauline would send her to the Brown Estate every holiday. It wasn’t about getting anything from the Brown family. Pauline just wanted mother and daughter to have time together, because the care from grandparents could never replace a parent’s love.

Sadly, Elise had never figured out how to be a good mother.

“You don’t get it,” Elise muttered. “Dorothea used to be so obedient and gentle. I don’t know what happened to her. Ever since she got married, she’s not the same.”

Pauline wanted to argue, but then held back. No point making things worse.

“Alright, when Dorothea gets here, just try to talk to her, okay?”

Dorothea arrived at the care center in a rush, worried that something was wrong with her grandma. But the moment she stepped into the courtyard and saw Elise standing there, her nerves caught fire.

Elise looked as cold and proud as always. She pressed her lips together and said, “You’re here. I’ve been waiting.”

Dorothea took a steadying breath and didn’t even glance at Elise. Instead, she smiled sweetly at her grandmother. “Grandma, let’s go over there and sit in the sun for a bit.”
