When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 373

Scott and the cops had been hiding out at Beechwood for hours.

At seven, Mamie drove Dorothea close to the meeting spot, with an undercover team following quietly behind. As it got closer to the time for the exchange, Dorothea climbed out of the car, lugging two big suitcases after her.

Mamie squeezed her hand tight. “Be careful, okay?”

Dorothea nodded, determination in her eyes. “I will.”

Sure enough, exactly at eight, Walton called.

“See that green trash can in the middle of the square? Leave the ransom beside it. Then walk away.”

Dorothea’s voice shook. “You’ll get your money, but what about my husband? How do I know you’ll let him go? I want to hear him. Right now.”

Walton sighed in annoyance and kicked Latham, who was so weak from not eating for two days that his lips looked almost white.

Walton put the phone on speaker. “Your wife’s on the line. She thinks you’re dead or something. Say something.”

Latham opened his eyes, and for a second, the smallest hint of a smile broke through. But what he said was, “Babe, you can’t drive. You can’t swim. Don’t come for me, just promise you’ll take care of yourself.”

Walton rolled his eyes and kicked him again, harder this time. “I told you to make a sound, not give her your whole life story!”

“You heard him, right? Now hurry up and drop off the money.”

Dorothea’s heart clenched at the sound of Latham’s weak voice and the pain that snuck into his words. “Don’t hurt him… I’m putting the money down, just tell me when you’ll let him go.”

But Walton was done talking. “You’ll get him back when I say so.” He hung up.

Dorothea’s palms got slick with sweat as she set the suitcases down neatly by the trash can.

Her phone buzzed. [Leave the money, and walk away.]
